When you buy a property off plan you are basically purchasing a property that is off the plan of the developers which is not going to be built for a period of time, payment for off plan properties is set in installments and the rest is payable after completion of the property.
Also off plan properties can and in most cases save you thousands of euros compared to purchasing a resale property, in most cases the property will then value more as a resale than it did when you bought it off plan.
Bad press on off plan property
Spain and just recently Bulgaria has received much bad publicity regarding their off plan properties, in Spain - illegally built properties by constructors is not un common, there has been cases of builders constructing properties with out the required paper work and planning permission, not being given water / electricity licences.
This can be easily avoided by using an independant solicitor from the builder to check all avenues to ensure that the development is legal, otherwise you to could fall into this trap.
